FAQ: Common Questions About Hospice Care in Oceanside
Navigating end-of-life care is often overwhelming. Below are answers to the questions we hear most frequently from families in the Oceanside and North County communities.
Who pays for hospice care in California?
For the vast majority of our patients, hospice is provided at little to no out-of-pocket cost.
- Medicare & Medi-Cal: Both cover 100% of hospice services, including nursing visits, medical equipment (like hospital beds), and medications related to the terminal diagnosis.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans are fully covered under the VA hospice benefit.
- Private Insurance: Most private plans offer a hospice benefit, though deductibles may apply depending on your specific policy.
Can I keep my own doctor if I start hospice?
Yes. Many families find comfort in maintaining a relationship with their long-term physician. You can name your regular doctor as your “Attending Physician.” Our team at Comfort and Peace Hospice will then collaborate directly with them to manage your care plan.
Does hospice mean we are “giving up”?
Absolutely not. Hospice is a choice to focus on quality of life rather than curative treatments that may no longer be effective or are causing undue suffering. Many studies show that patients on hospice often live longer and more comfortably because their pain and symptoms are expertly managed.
What happens if there is an emergency in the middle of the night?
You are never alone. Comfort and Peace Hospice provides 24/7 on-call support. If a crisis occurs at 3:00 AM, you call our local number, and a nurse will assist you immediately—whether that’s providing guidance over the phone or sending a team member to your home in Oceanside.
Can a patient leave hospice if their condition improves?
Yes. If a patient’s health stabilizes or they decide they would like to pursue curative treatment again, they can “revoke” hospice at any time. You are never “locked in” to hospice care; you always remain in control of your healthcare journey.
Where is hospice care provided in Oceanside?
Hospice is a service, not a place. We provide care wherever the patient calls “home.” This includes:
- Private residences
- Assisted living facilities
- Skilled nursing facilities
- Memory care centers
How Long Can Someone Stay in Hospice Care in Oceanside California?
The duration of stay at a hospice facility depends on a few different factors. One factor that needs to be considered is insurance coverage/Medicare. Another factor is the length of life left for the patient. Generally, hospice care is available to patients with around 6 months left to live, but it may be extended.
